Overview

Introduction

If you have multiple service areas, you need to ensure they don't overlap. Overlapping boundaries affect how bookings are tagged, which can cause a booking to be assigned to the wrong service area.

Use the following process to check existing areas against each other or while creating a new area in geojson.io.

Step 1: Download geoJSON files of the existing service areas

What is a GeoJSON file?

A GeoJSON file is a standardized format for representing geographic shapes and boundaries using coordinates. It is especially useful for complex shapes or when you need to precisely match existing territorial boundaries.

In the Dashboard, go to Settings > Service areas and open a service area’s details page.

Scroll to Area boundaries and click Download geoJSON. The file will be saved directly to your computer's Downloads folder.

Repeat this for each service area you want to compare.

Step 2: Upload files to geojson.io

Open geojson.io. Click Open in the top right corner and select all downloaded GeoJSON files.

Step 3: Check boundaries and make edits

All service areas appear on the map. Check if any boundaries overlap.

  • If there is no overlap, no changes are needed.

  • If areas overlap, select the edit tool and click the area you want to change. You can move corner points or add new points.

If you are creating a new service area, see the article on How to create a GeoJSON file with geojson.io for best practices.

Step 4: Save edited Service Areas

When multiple areas are loaded into geojson.io, you can't simply click Save because then all areas will be combined into a single file. Each service area needs its own file to upload correctly into the Dashboard.

If you only edited one area

Click on the area you didn’t edit and delete it by clicking Delete feature.

When only the edited area remains, click Save and choose GeoJSON.

If you edited multiple areas

First download all areas in one file by clicking on Save and selecting GeoJSON from the dropdown. You need it later to restore deleted areas.

Delete all areas but the one you want to save by clicking on an area and Delete feature in the popover. Click Save and select GeoJSON. See the GIF above for visual guidance.

The file will be saved directly to your computer's Downloads folder. Go to the folder and rename the file to the service areas’ name so you later know which file belongs to which area.

Reopen the file with all areas and repeat until each service area is saved as its own file.

Step 5: Upload file to the Dashboard

Open the service area’s details page. Scroll to Area boundaries, click Upload geoJSON, select the file, and click Save.
